Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

The jazz performer Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born on February 20 1937 in the city of Chillicothe, Ohio. Her parents were ironworker Olden Wilson and the former Lillian Ryan who worked as domestic helper. Nancy was the youngest of six children. Nancy was a child who listened to records from her father as well as his enthusiasm for music. In her early years she was already able to establish the impression of who she was as well as what she hoped to accomplish. The choir at church was instrumental in developing her talent. At the age of 16, she began to appear regularly in Skyline Melodies. She was fifteen when she won the television talent show. The same year when she was working, she began performing in nightclubs. Her first recording was in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. They performed from 1956 until 1958. While in the group Nancy released her first record with Dot Records. Cannonball Adderley encouraged her to move to New York to further her professional career. She moved there to The Big Town in 1959. Within a month she got an offer to sing in The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road in The Bronx the place where her agent heard her, and she was signed. The singer made her debut in 1960 by releasing a single after he obtained a deal with Capitol records. Guess Who? Her albums were a hit and Capitol issued 5 Nancy Wilson albums in two years. At first, she focused on rhythm and blues, under Adderley's influence, she began to move away from R&B and began to embrace jazz and torch songs. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley together with their 1962 group made her a star. She had her breakthrough song Tell Me the Truth by 1963. The performance brought her to the stage at the New York Coconut Grove in 1963, which was America's biggest nightclub.
