Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson as an ironworker from Chillicothe on February 20, 1937. Her mother, Lillian Ryan worked as a household servant. Nancy was the youngest among six children. Nancy was heavily influenced by her father's music taste and the records that were played in her house. At the age of 4, Nancy already knew she would be a performer. Her talents were developed through singing in the church choir. When she was still in high school the singer was regularly featured on Skyline Melodies. The same year, Nancy began working in nightclubs. Nancy, then 17, graduated from high-school and matriculated at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to pursue a career as a musician. Her first album was with Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, with whom she performed from 1956 to 1958. Nancy's first Dot Records recording was made while she was in the Carolyn Club Big Band. Cannonball Aderley suggested she relocate to New York so as to improve her career. In 1959 she moved to The Big Town. She was commissioned to sing for The Blue Morocco Night Club in The Bronx, where Adderley's agent had heard her. His agent signed her with Capitol in 1960. The year she made her debut was the same year. Guess Who? Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. She began by focusing on R&B and then, with Adderley's influence, she started to take on jazz. Nancy Wilson's 1962 collaboration in 1962 with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top, and in 1963, she had her first hit Tell Me the Truth. It was this performance that helped her land a gig at New York Coconut Grove in 1963, America's most popular nightclub.
