Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winning jazz singer. Nancy Wilson was born on the 20th of February, 1937 in the city of Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson who was a worker at an ironworks and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic employee. Nancy was the sixth of seven kids. Nancy loved listening to the records of her father and his passion for music. When she was just four years old, she realized that she was going to be a star in the singing world. She developed her talent through her participation in the choir at church. When she won a talent contest in a television show around the age of 15, she started to regularly appear in Skyline Melodies, while still at high school. At nightclubs, she began singing at the age of fifteen. Nancy was 17 at the time she completed high school. After enrolling at Ohio Central State College - which is now Central State University - for one term, Nancy went on to become a professional performer. She recorded her first record with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. They toured from 1956 to 1958. As part of the group, Nancy made her first recording with Dot Records. Cannonball adderley encouraged her to move to New York in order to improve her career. The city she went to was The Big Town, New York in 1959. She was hired to sing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located in The Bronx which was where her agent had come across her. In 1960, he enlisted her to Capitol Records and in that same year she issued her debut single. Guess Who I Saw Today. Capitol released five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. In the era of Adderley, Wilson began concentrating on R&B but soon shifted towards torch and jazz. Their collaboration in 1962 with Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley helped propel her to fame and her breakthrough hit Tell Me the Truth in 1963. The following year it led to her being booked at the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
