Jazz musician Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born on February 20 1937 in Ohio, Chillicothe. She was the daughter of iron worker Olden Wilson and the former Lillian Ryan who worked as domestic helper. Nancy was the youngest of six siblings. Nancy grew up listening to the records of her father and his passion for music. As young as four an age, she knew she'd be a singing star. Her talent developed through her participation in the church choir. In high school the singer began appearing often on Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when she was crowned the winner of the TV talent show. The same year, Nancy started to work at nightclubs. Nancy, then 17, completed high school and was enrolled at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for an entire year prior to deciding to pursue a career as a musician. In 1956, she recorded her first album with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. The group toured with Rusty Bryant between 1956 and 1958. Nancy started recording with Dot Records in 1956, while with the group. Cannonball Adderley urged her to move into New York in order to increase her fame. The city she went to was The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. Within a short time she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company was able to hear her perform and promptly signed her. It was a contract by Capitol Records in the year 1960. In 1960, she released her first single. Guess Who? Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Following the influence of Adderley the singer-songwriter shifted her focus away from R&B into jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in the year 1962 helped bring her to the forefront and her hit Tell Me the Truth was recorded in 1963. The following year it led to her getting booked in the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
